Salsa, bachata or kizomba: which should you start with?
There is no wrong answer — but each dance asks something different of you. Here is how to pick your first.

Newcomers often agonise over which dance to learn first, as if it were a lifelong commitment. It is not. Most dancers end up doing two or three. But starting with the one that fits you makes those first weeks far more fun.
The quick version
- Salsa is fast, bright and social — lots of turns, lots of energy, the busiest scene.
- Bachata is closer and more sensual, with a gentler learning curve and romantic music.
- Kizomba is slow, grounded and deeply connected — subtle to watch, addictive to feel.
Match it to you
Love big energy and meeting lots of people? Start with salsa. Drawn to musicality and connection over flash? Bachata. Want the deepest lead-and-follow conversation? Kizomba rewards patience like nothing else.
Just try one
The fastest way to choose is to feel them. Drop into a beginner class for each over a few weeks — find one near you — and your body will tell you which one it wants to come back to.
