Leading and following: it's a conversation
The best partnerships are not one person obeying another. They are two people listening at the same time.

The words “lead” and “follow” make it sound like one person is in charge. On a good dance, it never feels that way. It feels like a conversation where both people are listening as much as they are speaking.
If you lead
- Offer, do not shove. A clear invitation beats a forced movement every time.
- Leave time. Your partner needs a moment to receive and answer the lead.
- Listen back. If a move is not landing, the floor is giving you feedback.
If you follow
Following is not waiting — it is active. Keep your own balance, finish your own steps, and bring your styling and timing to the dance. A follower with strong technique makes any leader look better.
Meet in the middle
Great connection is built from tone, not force: enough resistance to feel each other, never enough to pull. Find that, and even simple steps feel like a duet.
